The Southlands Tale Trailer
I remember seeing this trailer for the first time and being quite excited. Richard Kelly appeared to be following up the haunting Donnie Darko with a bat-shit crazy tale that mashed together high minded Sci-fi concepts with eclectic casting and an emotional soundtrack. It reminded me of the big ideas I’d found in Grant Morrison’s “The Invisibles” and I eagerly awaited the release in the cinema. Then it made roughly $3.87 in the States and never came to Australia. I bought the movie on DVD and still held high hopes for the tale, crossing my fingers that it was just too goddamn smart for regular movie goers. I have watched the movie a few times and insist on enjoying it even though it is pretty much a mess. Yet when I re-watch the trailer I still understand what excited me in the first place. I now use the trailer as a jumping off point to an alternate world where I see a version of the movie that is a classic. You should join me some time, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
